Patrick Robinson
I wasn’t a natural athlete. I didn’t grow up wrestling, playing football, or competing in any sport. I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the 1990s with limited access to instruction, training out of a small gym in rural Indiana. My coach lived in another state, and I only saw him a few times a year.
When I was a blue belt, I was already teaching, guiding a room full of students who had even less experience than I did. If I wanted to improve, I had to figure out how to do it largely on my own.
With no high-level training partners and no black belts around, I had to be intentional with every aspect of my training. I couldn’t just show up to class and hope to get better. I had to develop a structured approach—an actual game plan—to make the most of every training session, every roll, and every competition. This strategic mindset became my greatest asset.
Despite the obstacles, I went on to win some of the biggest and most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world. I became a 4th-degree black belt, one of the top-ranked IBJJF Master Division competitors in both gi and no-gi, and the head instructor of Choke-U Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Valparaiso, Indiana. My success wasn’t due to superior athleticism, youth, or access to world-class training partners—it was due to strategy, preparation, and an understanding of how to impose my game on my opponents.
This approach to training and competition led me to develop my Game Plan Method, which I detail in Roll to the Top and now teach through my online coaching, seminars, and courses. My goal is to help BJJ competitors—whether they’re stepping onto the mats for their first tournament or trying to reach the podium at major events—build a personalized game plan that maximizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses.
If you want to stop rolling aimlessly, take control of your development, and compete with confidence, I can help. Through my coaching, courses, and seminars, I teach athletes how to systematically develop a structured game plan that fits their style, skill set, and competition goals.
Whether you’re a competitor looking for a competitive edge or a dedicated practitioner who wants to train with purpose, I invite you to explore my resources and take your Jiu-Jitsu to the next level.
